Amazon has confirmed its acquisition of Globalstar, marking a significant expansion of its satellite ambitions. The deal will integrate Globalstar’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites into Amazon’s growing Project Kuiper ecosystem.

A key outcome of the acquisition is the acceleration of direct-to-device (D2D) capabilities, enabling standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites for messaging, calls, and data services.

The move also strengthens Amazon’s partnership with Apple. Globalstar currently powers satellite features such as Emergency SOS on iPhones, and the new agreement ensures these services will transition to Amazon’s infrastructure over time.

Amazon plans to launch next-generation D2D satellites by 2028, aiming to deliver faster speeds and improved efficiency. The acquisition is expected to close in 2027, pending regulatory approval.

This development positions Amazon as a major player in the race for global satellite connectivity.
