Electric vehicle charging may soon feel as routine as stopping at a gas station. Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled real-world demonstrations of its new ultra-fast charging technology, showing an EV gaining nearly 250 miles of driving range in just five minutes.
The breakthrough comes from BYD’s Super e-Platform, a 1000-volt architecture paired with the company’s Flash Charging Battery. The system supports charging power of up to 1 megawatt, allowing energy to flow at levels previously unseen in mass-market electric vehicles.
According to BYD, vehicles equipped with the technology can recover roughly 400 kilometers of range in the time it takes to grab a coffee. The company has already launched models using the platform, including the Han L and Tang L, with prices starting near $30,000 in China.
Footage circulating online shows charging speeds approaching 750 kW, with batteries jumping from low levels to 70% in under five minutes. BYD says the technology is designed to remove one of the final psychological barriers to EV adoption: charging anxiety.
The company also confirmed plans to expand the system beyond China, with Europe expected to be among the next markets.
