Meta is reportedly considering large-scale layoffs that could affect up to 20% of its workforce as the company increases investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to sources familiar with the matter, executives have begun discussing potential workforce reductions internally as part of a broader effort to control rising costs tied to AI development.
The layoffs have not been finalized and no timeline has been announced. However, senior leaders have reportedly been asked to prepare plans for possible staff reductions. If implemented at the rumored scale, the cuts would represent one of the largest workforce reductions in Meta’s history.
The company had roughly 79,000 employees at the end of last year. A 20% reduction could potentially impact tens of thousands of workers. Meta previously carried out significant layoffs in 2022 and 2023 as part of a restructuring initiative called the “year of efficiency.”
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has increasingly prioritized artificial intelligence as a central part of Meta’s strategy. The company is committing massive resources to AI development, including plans to spend around $600 billion building new data centers by 2028. These facilities will power the computing infrastructure needed to train and operate advanced AI systems.
Meta has also been aggressively recruiting AI talent, offering extremely large compensation packages to attract top researchers. In addition, the company has been expanding its AI ecosystem through acquisitions and partnerships.
Executives believe AI systems may eventually allow smaller teams to accomplish work that once required large departments. As automation improves productivity, companies across the tech industry are reevaluating workforce needs.
Other technology companies are taking similar steps. Several major firms have recently reduced staff while increasing investment in AI development and automation tools.
Meta has not confirmed the layoff plans and described the reports as speculative.
