Nvidia announced a $26 billion investment to develop open-weight AI models, marking a shift from hardware provider to direct competitor of OpenAI and Anthropic. According to SEC filings, this is the largest single commitment to open-weight AI development in history.

The company has spent the past two years quietly assembling AI research talent and already controls the compute infrastructure required to train large models. Open-weight models release the model weights but not under full open-source licenses, creating a middle ground between closed systems like OpenAI and fully open-source models such as Meta’s Llama.

The investment covers model development, computing infrastructure, talent recruitment, and ecosystem projects, including partnerships and potential acquisitions. Nvidia’s move challenges its own customers, including major cloud providers, potentially triggering competition in chip supply.

First model releases are expected by late 2026 or early 2027. Analysts predict that if Nvidia captures even 10% of the foundation model market, it could generate $50 billion in additional annual revenue within three years.
