Operation Bluebird, a new tech startup, has filed a petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office seeking to cancel X Corp.’s ownership of the “Twitter” and “Tweet” trademarks. The founders claim X Corp., formerly Twitter under Elon Musk, “abandoned” the brand following its rebranding to X. The petition asserts that Musk’s public statements and the redirection of Twitter.com traffic to X.com indicate a discontinuation of the original marks. Operation Bluebird plans to use the trademarks for a new social platform called Twitter.new, promising a familiar experience with added AI moderation and user control. Legal experts note that while Operation Bluebird has a plausible case under US trademark law, the concept of residual goodwill could complicate proceedings. X Corp. has until February to respond, and any resolution could take several years, potentially moving through both the USPTO and courts. Despite potential hurdles, Operation Bluebird insists it is prepared to defend its claim and proceed with its new social media vision.
