xAI has officially brought its Colossus 2 supercomputer online, marking a new milestone in large-scale AI infrastructure. According to Elon Musk, the system is now operating at one gigawatt of power, making it the first AI training cluster in the world to reach that scale.
The new system is designed to train xAI’s Grok language models. Together with Colossus 1, the infrastructure already supports more than one million H100 GPU equivalents, placing xAI among the largest AI compute operators globally.
Execution speed has drawn attention across the tech sector. Colossus 1 reportedly went from site preparation to full operation in just 122 days, while Colossus 2 crossed the 1GW threshold even faster and is scheduled to reach 1.5GW by April.
The expansion follows a massive funding round. xAI recently closed a $20 billion Series E, with capital earmarked for infrastructure growth, new AI products and continued model training, including work on Grok 5.
